Dear Parents and Guardians,
Pleasenote that school will be closed the week of February 18th throughFebruary 22nd. Schoolwill resume on Monday, February 25th . Childcare is available on the Oakland campus TuesdayFebruary 19th through Friday, February 22nd. There is no childcare available onPresidents’ Day, February 18th.
Ourfocus in history has moved from Colonial America to the Revolutionary War. First we brainstormed everything weknew about the American Revolution, then came up with a list of questions toguide our research. In the comingweeks we will be researching various aspects of the Revolution, including majorcauses, events, battles, and consequences.
In addition, the class isstudying the major contributions and history of African Americans. We have been discussing the greatcivilizations of Africa prior to the 1600’s and the impact of capture andenslavement of their native populations on these nations.
In math, we are finishing the unit on operations with mixed numbers infractions. The students are alsoenjoying our introduction to proportional reasoning with the stories from Gulliver’sTravels. They first compared tracings of objects from Lilliput, andconcluded that everything in Lilliput was about a twelfth the size it is in ouruniverse. Then, the mathematiciansexamined a tracing of a giant paperclip from Titania and discovered that thingsin Titania are four times as large as here. Currently, the students are measuring classroom supplies, then making accurate proportional drawings of how large these supplies must bein Titania. We have giant picturesof sharpies, cassette tapes and more objects hanging from our classroom walls.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thisweek, we have been completing our unit on Colonial America. The children successfully finishedtheir colony simulation game and learned about some of the hardships that facedthe colonists. They also exploredthe impact of colonization on the natives of both America and Africa.
Ournext unit in our mathematics program will use Gulliver’s Travels as a basis for utilizing the ideaof size as a model of proportions. The children have read a simplified version of the story to compare thesize of people, objects, and animals in Lilliput versus the size of people, objects, and animals in our universe.
Bynow you should have received Archway’s information packet about our upcomingski trip in March. Havingchaperoned on this particular trip for at least four years, I can assure youthat your child will be safe and have lots of fun. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate tocall or email.
Onanother note, it is the end of our second marking period. This marking period, you will receiveletter grades and a progress report for your child. If you have concerns or questions, please contact me toschedule a parent-teacher conference.

SocialStudies -- Diary Situation1
Our first winter in the New World is drawing to a close. You are one of the lucky ones. You are still alive. You landed in the New World with great hopes and dreams. Unfortunately you and the others were not prepared for what lay ahead. Your first mistake was starting a colony late in the year. You were short of food and other supplies, and a dreadful winter was closing in. You and the others attempted to build shelters and prepare for the winter, but the frightening cold, the diseases, the lack of food, medicine, and shelter – all these were too much. Many people became sick and died. Those who were not ill had to spend most of their time caring for the sick and dying.
Now spring is coming. Your colony is weak and small, but you and most of the other survivors are determined to succeed.
Write a one-page diary account of your experiences since arriving.
Include some of your thoughts and experiences concerning the winter, the disease, and the death. Comment on how you feel about surviving, and your plans for the future.
Strive for verisimilitude. This word means “the quality of seeming real.” To make your descriptions real, use descriptive words which create pictures in your reader’s mind. For example, rather than writing that your sister “looks sick,” you might write that a “horrid fever has heated her face into a burning read glow.
You will begraded on spelling, punctuation, grammar, and content. The page must be in paragraph format.
Math:
· Thefive worksheets attached are due on Friday.
Reading
· Read according to your group’s schedule to prepare to meet on Tuesday (your completed work from day 8 is due on Tuesday) and Thursday (your completed work from day 9 is due on Thursday).
You will need to spend the rest of the week putting togetheryour reading journal. Save somehomework time to rewrite any portion of your journal that needs more work.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Pleasenote that school will be closed Monday, January 28 for the annual Symposium ofthe East Bay Independent Schools Association (EBISA) and will resume on TuesdayJanuary 29.
Inhistory, the class is enjoying our colony simulation game. The three colony groups purchasedanimals, food and other supplies, and set sail for the new world. They examined different ocean currentpatterns to decide their route. Most teams chose to sail on the equatorial current and so made goodtime.
Inmath we continued to develop decimal concepts, and began using our knowledge toadd and subtract decimals of different place values. We also began reviewing converting fractions todecimals. Building on these ideas,we explored the idea of percents and their relation to decimals.
