Archway School

Families

"The teachers at Archway were people I felt close to. . . people that gave me an education, but taught me about life."

Katie, Class of 2007

Parents are essential to Archway School. We bring our special skills to the school by teaching electives in computers, story-telling and film-making. Teachers invite us to be guest speakers on astronomy, archeology and law. We play chess and make music with the kids.

As integral participants in the Archway community family members contribute in a variety of ways to the school. We garden, paint and build play structures. We drive on field trips. We organize Archway's walkathon, raffle, auction, annual giving and online fundraising (escrip and schoolpop.com). Our Outreach/Diversity Committee works with school administrators to bring new families to Archway and to reflect the ethnic diversity of Oakland and Berkeley among both students and staff.

We lend a hand at the Halloween/Dias de los Muertos parade, the Harvest Festival and the Chinese New Year parade (Special Events). We keep abreast of our kids' progress by attending Portfolio Parties and parent-teacher conferences. We celebrate together at the December Multicultural potluck and the June promotion ceremonies. Through meetings, newsletters and committees, our parents association provides a way to share ideas and voice our concerns.
