Camping, Snow & Field Trips

"Archway taught me that school wasn't just a daily activity, but a daily adventure."

Archway Student

A highlight of the school year has long been the class camping trip. Held in either the fall or spring, each student participates in the planning, organizing, shopping and execution of the class's camping trip. Typically the focus originates from a curriculum area (community service, science, or social studies, for example). These trips are invaluable for the bonding and lessons in outdoor education they provide.

The annual snow trip offers 5th through 8th graders a chance, sometimes for the first time, to ski, snowboard, or just play in the snow. We stay at the Sierra Club's Claire Tappan Lodge in Tahoe, located near several local ski resorts. This has been an exciting trip every year — popular with both staff and students.

Field trips are considered an opportunity to enhance what is already being studied in the classroom and are a regular part of the Archway School experience.   Oakland Museum of California, Lawrence Hall of Science, Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA), Slide Ranch, San Francisco Symphony, and Cal Performances are just a few of the more popular places we visit annually.
