Electives
Choice is an important element in every child's education. At Archway we believe that providing the students with a variety of experiences in the academic and creative disciplines allows students to develop a broad range of skills. They may try things only to discover it is not their preference, but often they will discover a hidden talent. At the Lower Campus teachers provide choice time during which students may decide to read a story, write a poem, or play a math game with a classmate. When working on a project, students are given the choice of the manner of their presentation. Some students will choose to present orally while others may choose a diorama or written report. Whatever they choose, at Archway they begin to practice independence and develop responsibility from very early on.
The Upper Campus offers choice through a variety of elective offerings each semester that are in addition to core enrichment classes (Art, Spanish, Drama). Archway teachers as well as outside providers combine to present an array of curriculum enhancements that are a draw for adolescents. Classes range from pottery to Chinese cooking, from cross-country running to ultimate frisbee, from poetry to modern dance. Each semester will find a different complement of electives to enrich the education of our middle school students.
